Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Joe, and I’m a web design apprentice. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the aesthetics and functionality of digital platforms. This passion led me to choose Graphic Design for my GCSEs. Enjoying this subject in school confirmed my desire for a creative career in digital art and design.
“In my spare time, I enjoy online gaming at a semi-professional level and designing for well-established organisations. I also design for an emerging tournament site, which has opened up exciting opportunities for me to create logos, banners, and clothing for esports teams and tournaments worldwide.”

What interested you in applying for an apprenticeship at gloversure?

Both my Mum and Dad have always been very supportive, especially when they noticed I was earning small amounts from designing. Their encouragement led me to explore apprenticeship opportunities. I applied for several apprenticeships and received multiple job offers. After much consideration, it was clear that gloversure was the perfect fit for me.

What was the interview process like?

The interview process at gloversure was a major factor in my decision to join them. Unlike other interviews that were mostly theoretical, gloversure’s process was both challenging and practical. The technical test, which involved creating a web design concept for a surfing brand, was particularly enjoyable. My previous experience in web design helped me create a clean and easy-to-navigate concept. Overall, the interview process was pleasant, and the interviewers were down-to-earth, making me feel confident in discussing my skills and experiences.

What is a typical day like as a web design apprentice?

Every day in the office is different, which is one of the reasons I love working in this industry. My daily activities range from web design, logos, and banner creation to working on large digital marketing campaigns. I have also started learning HTML and CSS, which I absolutely love. It’s incredibly gratifying to design and code something that is visible on the web for the world to see.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking of applying for an apprenticeship?

Never underestimate the importance of having a strong portfolio. Showcasing your work can convey your motivation and interests better than words. It demonstrates your passion and skills, supporting your CV and making a strong impression on potential employers.

What is the best thing about being a web design apprentice?

Working closely with my mentor, who teaches me basic design principles and industry best practices, is immensely rewarding. Applying this knowledge and seeing my work improve steadily is highly motivating. However, nothing beats the feeling of seeing my designs live and knowing that people are using the website daily.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Starting a new task can be nerve-wracking. However, various sites like Dribbble are great for inspiration. When it comes to coding, I prefer searching for solutions online before asking for help, as it’s immensely satisfying to overcome challenges and create great designs.
